Easy Pantry Organization

First, let me say, I know I've rarely posted here.  I've been busy over the years and focusing my time elsewhere, however I will try to post here more to make it easier to share my posts.  With that said....

Yesterday my mom and I went to Bed Bath and Beyond for a couple things, and wound up buying things we weren't even thinking about because the store we went to doesn't have makeup and toiletries.  Since I had nothing planned for the day, other than phone calls, and because it was early, we took our time wandering around the store.  While in the kitchen section we found something that would work in our pantry.  You see we've (my mom more than me) been slowly better organizing our pantry.  It's not a very big pantry, the doorway is a set of skinny bi-fold doors, the inside width isn't much more.  The depth is a different story.  Our pantry is deep and there is empty space above the top shelf.  I've thought about adding a shelf above that for things we don't use as often, but it would be hard to get to since it's not a walk in pantry.

Pantry before

Pantry before

As you can see, we have basic wire shelving.  We really didn't do anything about them for nearly 20 years, but after my mom retired a few years ago, she found ways to keep herself busy around the house.  One day she decided to turn her attention to the pantry.  A huge issue with wire shelving is the fact that they aren't a solid surface like say wood, and so things don't always sit flat, and things tend to fall through the bars.  A cheap and easy solution to that was to pick up some thin foam core boards from the dollar store and place them on top of the shelves.  After that came the baskets.  We shop at the dollar store, and don't mind that the baskets don't match each other or don't look fancy.

One thing we've always done is reuse jars, bottles and various other containers.  We have a mix of plastic and glass containers.  Until this year, we left things like pasta in their boxes but if it was something like popcorn purchased in a a bag, then we put that in a container.  I've always liked the look of things in jars but buying jars has always been a very low priority.  Fortunately some companies are using jars and other containers for things like candy and pretzels.  Most of the jars and containers we've acquired in recent years were purchased from Aldi.  So the pantry is looking more organized with the jars and containers.  One area that's been an issue is the section of the shelf that has the aluminum foil, plastic wrap, ziptop bags, etc.  We tried something years ago but it was a waste of time.  It just held one or two items and the reset was still a mess.

The mess, no this is not staged.

Yep, it's really a mess.

The solution?

This simple wire corner shelf for $6.99.  We didn't know if it would fit since we didn't know the measurements we'd need, but we bought it anyway with the thought that, if it didn't fit, I'd simply return it.  So once we were home, I did a trial run, I set it in the pantry and placed the items in and on it to see if they would fit and I was happy to see they did!  This was great because it saved me from having to go to Home Depot to spend quality time trying to figure out what I can make that's basically this, but was also sectioned off in each shelf.

There were a couple minor issues, the first was that the corner shelf unit didn't sit flat, it wobbled.  The second was the bottom shelf was nothing more than an outer wire, nothing inside.  Both were simple solutions, although the first was a teeny bit painful.  I bent the bottom wire by hand, it took a couple tries but I evened it out.  It still wobbles a hair, but it's not noticeable. The second was just as easy.  We have a large cardboard box that was cut down to fairly big pieces, so I took a piece, placed the corner shelf on top of it and traced the inner part of the frame and cut it out with a box cutter.  It just needed a little trim on one side but it fits perfectly!  Sorry I don't have pictures of the process, I thought about it after I was finished.

Pay no attention to the walls, we will be painting the pantry soon.

Once it was all done and set, I put everything into it.

It's so niiice.  Now that it's more condensed that gave me a chance to move the jars and containers over, which frees up space on the shelf to add more things.  The entire thing took maybe 5 minutes because I had to go over the cardboard a couple times for the blade to fully cut through.

What's next for our kitchen?  Paint the walls, possibly the cabinets (my mom wants to paint them white), possibly replace the counter tops and a tile back splash.

An update of sorts....

I wanted to post an update before I got lost in a sea of organza for the next few weeks.  I'm gearing up to put my organza peonies in a shop across the street from my work, that's like a craft mall, the owner supports local artists.  When I went in there a few weeks ago and looked around, I started talking to her and as we talked I got excited about the prospect of having my things in there.  I didn't feel the same way about the place closer to my house, and knew this was where I needed to venture into the world of renting shop space.  In addition to that, my friend is planning on having an artist holiday open house at her place in last November/early December this year.  So I've been busy focusing on making peonies (well steps one and two of it) for over a week now.  I've gotten a lot done in terms of cutting my old stash of fabric, most of that is gone and phase two of the process is almost fully finished with that first stack of cut fabric.  I'm going to finish those up tomorrow (probably) and then start cutting more fabric, probably finish up the old fabric before I move onto the new one.  So that I can finally get all my old fabric finished.

In addition to the peonies, I talked about putting my wine glass charms in there.  I might hold off on those for now though, I feel like I'm spending all of my paychecks before I get them.  Although I've only gotten one so far, but still; if I want to go to my cousin's wedding thanksgiving weekend I'm going to have to cut back on my spending.  So I'll probably pull the wine glass charms from my shop and put them in that store for starters. I'm looking forward to moving onto phase three of the peonies though, but for now, I'm trying not to feel impatient when cutting fabric so that I don't burn myself out before things really kick into high gear.

In addition to all of this, I'm learning the updated software for our lighting console at church and because we're adding more LED lights every week or two, it's starting to take longer to do the programming.  Which means two weeks out of the month I have to go in to church on Thursday nights to get my base looks programmed (if not more) when worship team is rehearsing, and then make any tweaks on Saturday so that I can get back to doing more dynamic lighting.

There are other, some what minor things, but they aren't as important.  What does all of this mean for my etsy shop you ask?  Well after I list the last two peonies from the six I made last week, I'm going to take a break from making and listing new things for there until close to Christmas.  If I even start listing anything new by then that is.

With that I'm going to leave you with an email I got from my friend last night, Romance Novel 2011

He grasped me firmly, but gently, just above my elbow and guided me into a room, his room.  Then he quietly shut the door and we were alone. He approached me soundlessly, from behind, and spoke in a low, reassuring voice close to my ear. "Just relax." Without warning, he reached down, and I felt his strong, calloused hands start at my ankles, gently probing, and moving upward along my calves, slowly but steadily. My breath caught in my throat. I knew I should be afraid, but somehow I didn't care. His touch was so experienced, so sure. When his hands moved up onto my thighs, I gave a slight shudder, and partly closed my eyes. My pulse was pounding. I felt his knowing fingers caress my abdomen, my ribcage. And then, as he cupped my firm, full breasts in his hands, I inhaled sharply. Probing, searching, knowing what he wanted, he brought his hands to my shoulders, slid them down my tingling spine and into my panties. Although I knew nothing about this man, I felt oddly trusting and expectant. This is a man, I thought... a man used to taking charge. A man not used to taking 'No' for an answer. A man who would tell me what he wanted. A man who would look into my soul and say...

"Okay ma'am, you can board your flight now."

Something Needs to be Done

As most people know, sales are non existant on etsy these days so I'm going to give my artfire account a try.  Right now I only have two things in there but I'm going to be listing some peonies in there to see how things go.  I haven't promoted my artfire shop at all and only have a free accont.  So this will be interesting to see.

Baby Shower Blanket

As some of you know, there's more to me than making jewelry and flowers, I am also crafty at other things.  A couple weeks ago I got an evite from an old friend, someone I've known for a good 30 years.  It was for a baby shower/house warming party. I took one look at her baby registry and said "I'm making something."  The reason for this was two fold, one I'm out of work and can't afford to spend much, and two, I just didn't see anything on her registry that I wanted to get for little money.  So I decided to make my money go further by giving her a handmade blanket.

Since I can't sew a straight line to save my life with a sewing machine, I decided to do a handmade blanket, fleece to be exact.  Rather than tab the edges of the two pieces of fleece to attach them, I went with a blanket stitch.  A quick search on youtube and I found this video:

I watched the video twice, once the day I looked for it and then again the next week when I actually had the fabric and was ready to sew.  It was a super easy stitch, I just didn't know how to add an additional length of thread so I stumbled my way through it the first two times, which resulted in two bad stitches but by the third one I had thought ahead and managed to make it look seamless.

All in all, it took a little over 2 hours to stitch together.  Trimming the fabric so that they were even took less than a half hour, I asked my mom to do that for me because I can't cut a straight line anymore and didn't want to ruin this.

As for the results...  it was a huge hit with the ladies that were sitting close and paying attention to what was going on, including my comment about it being handmade.  Not only did my friend love it, but she kept wrapping herself in it.  I kept reminding her that was was for the baby, not her, but she was so cold (the air was on in the house) that she couldn't resist.  As I was walking to my car I once again teased her about the blanket being for the baby, I told her I'd make her one if she wanted.
